DePuy / Zimmer Hip Recalls
In August 2010, The Johnson & Johnson DePuy artificial hip implant was recalled due to reports that a number of devices had to be surgically removed and replaced with new implants. In July 2008, Zimmer recalled its faulty Durom Cup. The Zimmer Durom Cup has been implanted in at least 12,000 patients around the country.
Hip Replacements can Loosen
Friction caused by the device’s metal ball rubbing against the plastic lining can result in the flaking off of small polyethylene particles. The body’s immune system reacts to the particles as foreign matter and attacks it and the surrounding bone, a process known as osteolysis. As bone loss occurs, the hip implant can loosen and function improperly.
How to identify artificial hip failure
Pain at the site of the implant which restricts the patient’s daily activities is a strong indicator of hip failure. Other symptoms of a defective hip include (but are not limited to):
- Discomfort, dislocation, and clicking sounds in the area of the implant
- Difficulty walking and reduced range of motion
- Release of metal ions, which can cause severe nerve and brain damage
